When Are Tooth Extractions Necessary?

We always prioritize saving your natural teeth whenever possible, but there are situations where tooth extractions are the best course of action to protect your overall oral health. Extractions may be recommended in the following cases:

  • Severe Tooth Decay or Damage
  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth
  • Overcrowding

Benefits of Dental Exams

Dental exams performed by a reputable dentist in Canton, OH, like Dr. Said, will improve your overall health by:

Remove Plaque and Tartar

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth. If plaque is not removed, it can harden into tartar, which is much more difficult to remove. Dental cleanings remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, helping to keep your smile healthy.

Protect Your Tooth Enamel

Plaque and tartar can also damage your tooth enamel, the hard outer layer of your teeth. When the enamel is damaged, it is more susceptible to decay and other oral health problems. Dental cleanings help to protect your tooth enamel and keep your smile looking its best.

Whiten Your Teeth

Over time, your teeth can become stained by coffee, tea, tobacco, and other dark-colored foods and drinks. Dental cleanings can help to remove these stains, leaving you with a brighter, whiter smile.

Procedures

The Tooth Extraction Procedure

To ensure your comfort during the procedure, Dr. Said will numb the affected tooth, surrounding gums, and jawbone with a local anesthetic. This will prevent pain, though you may still feel pressure from the extraction process.

During the extraction, you will experience pressure as Dr. Said gently rocks the tooth to widen the socket and remove it. If at any point you feel pain, please inform us immediately so we can address it.

In some cases, a tooth may be sectioned into smaller pieces to facilitate easier removal. This is common when a tooth is deeply anchored or has a curved root that makes extraction challenging.

AfterCare

Post-Extraction Care

Manage Bleeding

Bite down on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes immediately after the extraction. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze and apply firm pressure for another 30 minutes. Repeat as necessary until bleeding is controlled.

Protect the Blood Clot

After a blood clot forms, avoid actions that could dislodge it, such as rinsing, sucking through straws, smoking, drinking alcohol, or brushing near the extraction site. These activities can hinder the healing process.

Swelling and Pain Management

Expect some swelling and discomfort after the procedure. Apply an ice pack or an unopened bag of frozen peas to the area to minimize swelling. Take prescribed pain medications as directed, and continue antibiotics if prescribed, even if symptoms improve.

Dietary and Oral Care

Stick to soft, nutritious foods on the day of the extraction and drink plenty of fluids. Resume normal dental hygiene, including brushing and flossing, after 24 hours to support healing and maintain oral cleanliness.
